Sweet Charity (October 2022)
27–29 October 2022, Websters Theatre
The 1960s Fosse classic about a hopelessly-romantic exotic dancer who goes searching everywhere for the love that will change her life. It’s hopeful, stylish, camp, funny, slick, silly, sexy musical theatre with heart and an edge. Pure Fosse, and the show we need right now (but have to wait til October for).

A Three Year Journey
Green Door Theatre’s Sweet Charity held auditions in late 2019, and was set to be performed 30 April to 2 May 2020. Production was put on hold from March 2020, just weeks away from opening night. Following a two-year hiatus, rehearsals resumed in Summer 2022, with many performers returning. Due to the lapse in time, however, circumstances meant many could not return.
The original 2020 cast featured Luca Hlaing as Herman (replaced by Alasdair MacRae), and Gerry McLaughlin as Daddy Brubeck (replaced by Chase Condon). Anna Bryan, originally cast as Ursula, returned as a member of the Company instead, with Vanessa Sedgwick stepping in as Ursula. Company members Julia Boardman, Owen Davies, Morag Hannah, Fergus Hughes, Jacqui McGuire, Zoe Most, Danielle Sigua and Gillian Wilson did not return following lockdown. In 2022, the Company added Aimee Friel, Vicky Glen, Gemma Gray, Angus Reid, Ruth Trower and Christine Wardrop. Ronan Aguilera, a Company member in both 2020 and 2022, was replaced at short notice by Sweet Charity Director, Andi Denny.
The Production Team also underwent a few changes in the interim. 2020 Assistant Director, Hannah M Brown, was promoted to Stage Manager, and Producer Rachel Thomson welcomed a new Co-Producer, David Watt. The team added four new assistants: Celia O’Brien and Millie Tigwell (Assistant Directors), Ellie Moran (Production Assistant), and David Hewitson (Creative Assistant). Our original 2020 poster was designed by Craig Higgins, while the 2022 iteration was designed by Liam Young.
No matter where they joined us, or left us, the Green Door team is eternally thankful to everyone who played a role in our long Sweet Charity journey – spanning three years, two casts, and a life-changing event for us all.
